Whose Agenda?

Posted on 23 September 2024

Are you true to yourself?

Have you ever wondered about whose agenda you are working from and living by? Are you able to please yourself in this life or are you living your entire life in order to satisfy the needs of another?

The childhood agenda

As a child or a minor you are always subject to the whims of parents at home, teachers at school and adults generally in the wider world.

You must often – in your formative years certainly – live according to the rules set by your parents and/or your guardians because that is the safest option in order to ensure your survival when you are too young to take your own decisions. In early years, for instance, you must be guided by those who know that water can drown you or fire can burn you and this is a vital part of your survival and maturity process. But parents often have their own petty agenda which muddies the waters of the equation and this agenda is not always beneficial to you. Parents should be caring but not neglectful, bigoted, prejudiced, dictatorial, small-minded, unfeeling or mindless. But this is easier said than done and frequently utopia cannot be achieved in practice.

The education agenda

At school you will be subject to the rules of conduct, the needs of the institution and the caprices of your educators. Sitting up straight may seem a dictum from on high. Or getting your homework in on time may be a punishable offence. You will need, furthermore, to jog along with your schoolmates and sometimes you will become the butt of the bullying gangs or tempted to join the oppressors yourself. Life is hard when battling for survival or when avoiding being dominated by others.

Was there a teacher or teachers at school who singled you out for punishment or derided your attempts to please him/her?

Were you bullied at school because you were used to being pushed around at home?

Were your parents supportive of your needs at school or did you simply get told off if you received a poor school report?

Were you at all interested in the topics which you were required by law to study?

The employment agenda

At work you may similarly be fighting for your survival. You may face fierce competition from your colleagues or pressure from your superiors if you wish to gain promotion or simply to retain your job and, consequently, to avert starvation and raise a family.

Is there keen competition for jobs which turns your so-called friends into your enemies?

Do you find someone at work impossibly oppressive or hard to please?

Are you are being mercilessly exploited by your employer?

Is your work unfulfilling, tedious and/or soul-destroying and yet you have no prospects elsewhere?

The relationship agenda

A life partner can, moreover, sometimes be someone who expects to have every whim gratified and you may find yourself attempting to comply with your partner’s agenda at some cost to yourself.

Is your partner unhelpful, uncaring, neglectful or irresponsible which adds to the burden of your life?

Are you holding up the roof while your partner is a couch potato, a wastrel or a petty-minded dictator?

Are you the only one who takes responsibility in your household?

Are you run ragged by your demanding kids?

Work for yourself

If you would like to rid yourself of being dominated by or subjected to the moods of another, then please seek the assistance of a practitioner who can help you to address your demons.
