Humankind is a herding animal. We have survived because there is safety in numbers and our ultimate instinct in life is to survive at all costs. We need to survive because we endeavour to strengthen the herd. The inter-dependent cycle, hence, is for the individual to strengthen himself/herself in order to strengthen the herd. Survival is, consequetly, an inherent genetic necessity which has existed for as long as humankind has inhabited the planet.
Survival
Survival of the individual depends on oxygen, nutritious food, clean water, shelter, adequate sleep, rest, exercise and the expulsion of toxins. We also have an in-built need to procreate in order to ensure the continuance of the species. A lack of intense and ongoing stress will greatly assist all these basic survivalist needs.
If you, for instance, eat unhealthy junk food, drink too much alcohol, live in unsavoury conditions, become a couch-potato, burn the candle at both ends, cannot commit to a relationship and generally lead an over-stressed life, then you are basically killing yourself. And perhaps you should ask yourself why?
Herding instincts
Evidence of herding instincts can be observed in your own behaviour and that of others. There are many personal traits and circumstances which may indicate that you are happily an integral part of the herd or else an unfortunate misfit.
- Do you have a need to keep up with fashion and perhaps spend too much time worrying about your appearance?
- Do you worry about what others think of you and fear that you might alienate yourself from the herd?
- Do you make lame excuses for the those who misuse or abuse you because you do not want to upset the status quo?
- Do you ruthlessly want to become a leader of the herd by building your own empire and perhaps riding roughshod over the feelings of others?
- Do you just want to follow others and jog along nicely with the rest of the herd?
- Do you have a conventional family unit and you want to keep it that way at whatever cost to yourself?
- Are you over-interested in self-preservation at the expense of others?
- Do you dread being criticised, misjudged or unfairly treated?
- Are you attention-seeking or needy and do you desperately turn to others for assistance?
- Have you learned to be outspoken, stroppy and antisocial because you generally loathe people?
These factors throw up many stressful and traumatic issues and may, indeed, result from long-standing childhood issues. Today’s unmanageable and unwanted stress stems from the past not the present. Why not do yourself a life-enhancing favour and iron out some of your bad habits, unhappiness and self-punishing syndromes?
