Auto-Pilot

Posted on 23 April 2026

Did you know that most people are operating on auto-pilot most of the time? And do you realise that many people, at best, simply have a knee-jerk reaction to life’s circumstances and, at worst, have explosive responses when the cage is rattled?

The reason for the auto-pilot is that we are driven by our unconscious mind inherited from the caveman era rather than any cool logic. Logic goes out of the window when the primitive limbic system (the unconscious mind) kicks in and dominates our mindlessness and our automatic responses. Much of your auto-pilot, furthermore, manifests in your vulnerable early years when you were trying to survive and to understand the world.

Can you detect the auto-pilot within your parentage?

Was Mum or Dad over-controlling, pedantic about your behaviour, incensed about what the neighbours thought, paranoid about religion or politics? Did this behaviour result in cruelty towards you or being inconsiderate of your needs? And yet, if you protested or complained, did your Mum or Dad become angry and then punished you further or felt self-pity and then accused you of being inconsiderate and ungrateful?

Let’s take an example

A client sought therapy because she was suffering from being ill-treated by her partner who was frequently drunk and verbally abusive.

The client related the story of her mother who was dictatorial and would brook no opposition when making demands on her daughter during her upbringing. The client reported being made to do endless household chores from an early age and being told what to wear when she went out of the house right up until her teenage years. The result was that the client felt she could not make decisions of her own and she expected others to ill-treat her throughout her life.

The client soon came to realise that her mother had only one way of reacting to any given situation. And, when tackled by her daughter during her early teens, her mother would simply retreat to bed in tears at any time whenever her destructive behaviour was questioned by the client. Mother’s auto-pilot was, therefore, to be controlling, on the one hand, and self-pitying, on the other. There were no grey areas in mother’s behaviour which resulted in psychological damage for the client in childhood and an inability to make an appropriate choice of partner in adulthood.

Analytical hypnotherapy assisted this client to come to terms with her puzzling dilemma dating from childhood and her current difficulties with an intolerable partner whom she eventually left because he could not change. The client was now able to take charge of her own life and to make sensible decisions.
