To Love and Be Loved

Posted on 18 September 2025

What’s all this about love?

We are put on this earth to love and be loved as an inherent part of our survival. The instinctive need to seek a mate persists so that we can love and be loved and hence procreate as part of the herd. If the majority of people find a mate and procreate humankind will secure the greatest chance of averting extinction.

As herding animals – of which humans are a prime example – we are genetically programmed, moreover, to find safety in numbers as social animals. The immediate and the extended family unit is an integral part of this principle as are friends and acquaintances.

The ideal world

WHAT HAPPENS IN AN IDEAL WORLD?

A little love goes a long way and will result in a happy life for the individual.

You will love your mate and the family which you have together created. You will love your children so that you will instinctively nurture them, provide a comfortable standard of living for them, educate them and provide safety. You will love your pets and your friends as an extension of the family circle.

A child will instinctively love his/her parents and other carers because this ploy will be his/her only means of survival. The child will love his/her siblings in order to preserve the integrity of the family unit. Your children will thus learn to love their friends and their future intimate partner and so the human species can safely continue.

The less than ideal world

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THINGS GO WRONG?

Love for and from a partner

What if you do not find a partner or your partner turns out to be unloving or unlovable?

What if you are incapable of giving or receiving love from a spouse or a partner?

What if your love is not returned by your partner or your love is unrequited?

What if your unhappy union causes squabbling between siblings and the family unit is ripped asunder?

What if you lack friends as a substitute for a close family unit?

Any lack of love in your world may be a recipe for disaster and/or can spell dire unhappiness for you for the rest of your life. The divorce and separation statistics testify to the fact that relationship failures and breakups are rife in society and, if you contribute to one of these statistics, you could feel rather unfulfilled and dissatisfied with your existence.

Love for and from a parent

A lack of love for a child can mean a life of psychological upheaval for that individual in adulthood.

Children are predisposed to adore those responsible for their upbringing and survival and the child will hence inevitably be blind to the faults of his/her carers as a result. A parent may be negligent, cruel, uncaring or heartless but the child must accept this raw deal in order to survive. The tragedy of the age is that the couches of most psychotherapeutic clinicians are lined with grown-up children who were not loved by childhood carers.

The knock-on effect of a loveless childhood will be disastrous and may culminate in a series of dysfunctional relationships in adulthood and even an inability to love and to adequately care for one’s own children. An additional result of a harsh childhood may be an inability to make friends and so social isolation will be the order of the day for the unloved child.

BUT DO NOT SUFFER IN SILENCE!
