Emotional Intelligence

Posted on 16 November 2025

There is much hype banded about on the topic of so-called emotional intelligence some of which is feasible while most can be misguided and uninformed.

But what is emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence has been widely described as a means of managing emotions and being aware of the emotions of others.

The term was first coined by Daniel Coleman in his book, entitled Emotional Intelligence, published in 2020 in which the author maintains that emotional intelligence is more important that IQ. While this concept is undoubtedly true most people are unable to achieve emotional intelligence merely through active endeavour or wishful thinking. Becoming aware of your emotive reactions will only be the first step towards acquiring emotional intelligence because awareness does not mean that you can control or manipulate your emotive responses in any way at all.

Coleman cites four domains in which emotion rather than intellect will carry through particularly in terms of leadership skills and social interaction. Emotional Intelligence, consequently, embraces  self-awareness, emotive regulation, motivation and empathy which collectively are considered to have a positive impact on social relationships and personal wellbeing.

So how can you gain emotional intelligence?

The way in which you will act and react will be dictated by your life experience and many people have had a bumpy ride along the way. Unexpressed, suppressed or repression emotive junk will then dictated your reactions and your motivation along life’s path.

True emotional intelligence comes only when you look deeply into own mind, examine all your past reactions to events, release the pent-up negative emotional blockage and emerge with life-affirming enlightenment. Without this root-cause exploration and resolution approach you will merely be treating symptoms while not actually addressing the root-cause. And so nothing will change and you will continue to struggle relentlessly.

Would you like to become emotionally intelligent?

You will be able to become more emotionally aware and better able to interact socially when you investigate your own mind with the help of a JMHT practitioner. You will, as an added bonus, improve your intellect because once the limbic system (or unconscious mind) releases its baggage your intellect will surface and expand.

Please visit the “Find a Practitioner” page on the JMHT website (www.jmhypnotraining.co.uk). All JMHT practitioners have undertaken their own personal therapeutic investigation and, therefore, are ideally placed to assist the client with root-cause analysis and resolution.
