Can an argument ever be truly resolved?
When it comes to having a dispute with someone else you will often find that the parties involved will never ever be able to reach an agreement or to attain any real satisfaction when emotive reactions are involved.
This is because emotions have nothing to do with logical reasoning. An individual might, for instance, pick a fight, seek redress for an imagined sleight or stamp his/her foot at a perceived injustice. But, in essence, the disagreement can never actually be concluded because the argument is not based on any facts which can be proved either way. And, of course, the actual facts can never be agreed on by both parties. A sort of “you said this” and “you said that” scenario ensues as a never-ending downward spiral.
In a court of law, for instance, a dispute may reach a conclusion and someone may even receive a payout but will the parties involved ever, in fact, be truly satisfied? One party may receive a financial appeasement but will this actually redress the balance or put anything right? And will the emotions behind the lawsuit which prompted the court action actually rectify anything or wipe the slate? I think not because both prosecutor and defendant will each have his/her own take on events which will never coincide even when both parties have a clear memory of events.
But the true prompt for the court proceedings will have an emotional undertone which lies on the surface of the mind while its origin lurks ominously in the unconscious mind.
Let’s take an example
A client in therapy was invited to discuss the stress in her life. The client reported that her business partner has swindled her and that she was forced to take legal action in order to avoid bankruptcy.
When the client reported later that her legal action had been satisfactorily concluded, that the monies had been reimbursed and that the culprit was now having to pay the price of his fraudulence, she was asked about her feelings on the matter.
The client then reported that she felt that no financial compensation would ever be adequate recompense for her suffering and that she had been taken for a ride by her ex-business partner. On further investigation the client cited a number of occasions in her childhood when her father had cheated her mother and recalled the times when she herself had felt deceived by her parents as a result.
It was, however, only when the client examined a number of events from childhood of this nature and released the pent-up frustration attached that she did actually realise why she had been deceived by her ex-business partner in the first place and also why she had been utterly determined to seek legal redress.
Now the client, in consequence, was able to resume a normal life and to emerge from her distress – both emotional and financial – with a degree of optimism as a result of her newly acquired insight.
