What is the cost of growing up?
No one ever makes it through childhood without suffering from some degree of stress or trauma which will be retained in the inner mind where it can cause some trouble, at best, or really wreak havoc in many instances. But the majority of people are totally unaware of this phenomenon.
A baby is born as a helpless and an utterly immature being who is wholeheartedly dependent on others for his/her survival. If your childhood was reasonably happy and uneventful in terms of stress or trauma, then you may lead a satisfactory life without having to contend with too much psychological upheaval.
If, on the other hand, your childhood experiences were less than somewhat, then you will pay the price in some way until you can pacify your troublesome unconscious reactions and your unwanted motivations in the therapeutic context.
The child with a difficult start in life will, as a result, either suffer from a degree of stunted emotional development or else will be plunged into the adult world and forced to grow up too early. You might, therefore, profitably ask yourself either whether you are still stuck in childhood or whether you had to sacrifice your childhood for the sake of your own survival.
Whichever way you lean, your stance will have been adopted without your conscious awareness as an instinctive and survivalist stress-trauma response. And you are unfortunately stuck with this burden until you decide to resolve it with the help of a therapeutic practitioner. The best you can expect will be that your mind has unconsciously chosen a middle path but few people fall into this category.
Are you under-grown-up or over-grown-up?
The big question to ask yourself will be whether you are still an under-grown-up child or whether you are an over-grown-up child now that adulthood has arrived.
Being under-grown-up
The under-grown-up individual in adulthood, for instance, may exhibit many of the following traits:
- may display a degree of helplessness
- be needy and demanding of others
- could expect others constantly to rescue him/her
- might not show much initiative or independent thinking
- be indecisive and vague generally
- may need a wet-nurse or look for a mummy-substitute

Being over-grown-up
The over-grown-up individual in adulthood, for instance, may exhibit many of the following traits:
- may be intolerant of the perceived incompetence of others and fiercely independent
- might need to be in control of the actions of others and always need to be the boss
- might be dictatorial and inconsiderate of others
- may be hyper-active or a workaholic
- may be over-industrious or an over-productive high-achiever
- may feel the need to be highly organised and ultra-efficient
Perhaps you can add a number of traits to this list of over-grown-up adults?
