You should be completely free to make your own decisions, to hold your own personal views and to dictate the way in which you run your life. But for many people this is rarely achievable or a sheer luxury.
To be your own person is a rare treat for many people because of pressures from others in order to comply with their dictates. Whereas freedom of choice should be your birthright!
For example:
Is there someone in your life who expects you to comply with their wishes without question?
Do you know someone who does not believe that you have a mind of your own?
Do your parents insist that you pay them homage by making demands on your time or decreeing the way in which you should run your life?
Does your partner make impossible requests and then expect you to obey without question?
Does anyone you know pour scorn on your personal convictions, your philosophy of life or your life decisions?
Let’s take an example …
A client reported that she believed in spiritual doctrine but that her partner had strong objections to her attending the regular meetings run by the local spiritualist organisation. While he did not physically prevent the client from attending these meeting, her partner’s remarks before she left indicated his strong displeasure.
The client’s partner, for instance, would say “I wish you’d give up this rubbish” or “What would people think if they saw you mixing with these crazy people?”
Because the client had spent some time in therapy exploring the way in which her parents had continually sought to control her thinking especially when she was a child but, in essence, right throughout her life, she realised that she was affected by this undue pressure from her partner.
Eventually the client rebelled by telling her partner in no uncertain terms that he had no right to interfere with her beliefs or her activities. The client also suggested that her partner should take some therapy himself in order to investigate why he had such a strong need to exert pressure on her. Because of this forceful and no-holds-barred showdown, the client’s partner got the wake-up call and, in fact, he actually took some therapy himself sometime later and the effect was extremely beneficial for both parties.
The client, moreover, found a way of halting her parent’s interference in her life simply by exhibiting much more personal freedom and confidence as a result of her therapeutic sessions.
